Language fights were a constant in the news over the last two years — this is part history, part polity, and this was a highly expected question. Start with Odisha (pre-independence) and then move to the Andhra example (post-independence).

We gave a slightly tougher version of this in our tests — language fights are going on, and this was a highly expected question.

You can answer this if you have read Spectrum Modern India, though note that Spectrum does not cover the Odisha part.

UPSC Mains 2026The model of planned economy was adopted in India to address the regional imbalances left behind by colonial rule. Comment.

UPSCTREE Coverage CLASSES ONLY

This is Economic History 101 — easy to answer if you’ve read India After Gandhi or Bipin Chandra’s history book. You can also bring in growth centre and growth pole theories while discussing this (how we wanted to push industrialisation by putting industries in backward areas, expecting it to eventually result in forward-backward linkages and overall growth of that region — at places it worked and at places it failed). Also mention how our political leadership was particularly inspired by the Soviet Model. Covered in Modern India Classes and the Foundation course, but not in the test series.
